The Adventure:
Okay, so we just had them come back from the dungeon—they all lived and stuff, I think.
Anyway...
It'd been a year since Cecil, Shain and Peter had paid Bartholomew 10gp to go into the dungeons below his tavern. Tonight they were joined by a rough-looking fellow from Masit, capitol of the Empire of Amesh. This was Janus, a brawny blacksmith looking for adventure. Janus had his pockets picked by Cecil as an icebreaker, and shortly thereafter had his very first curry! Ill-chosen words about the quality of the Hollow Leg's lager led to fisticuffs with Igeth, one of the bar regulars. Janus won easily.
Then they went into the dungeons. As usual, they tied a rope to the trapdoor in the basement and climbed down. They visited their old favorite haunts—the room with the fireplace and the dire rats; the other room with the fireplace and the dire rats; found a broad corridor that apparently used to be part of T'Regnor's sewer system. It smelled “like ass.” Then they found a room they hadn't been to before, which had a fiendish wolf! The wolf was even guarding a treasure chest. Problem is, the door into that room had been stuck pretty good, so Shain made a ton of noise chopping it down with his axe. While the rest of the party was celebrating their treasure find, Janus went back into the hallway to retrieve his portable battleship armor sample. There, he was ambushed! By a shadowy figure! Who couldn't hit the broad side of a blacksmith. Janus responded by using his mighty flail to disarm the man. The fellow's rapier hit the ground, and the fellow beat feet as fast as he could. Janus decided not to run after him.
Shortly thereafter, Cecil heard an ominous sound, like a trapdoor being closed. They figured Janus' assailant had fallen into a pit and died.
Profit already in hand, the party decided to visit one more room. This involved braving a short section of sewer. The last room had a humanoid that looked like it had set itself on fire recently. It smelled worse than ass. They killed it quickly, but someone felt sick to their stomach. After that, the party decided to return to the tavern.
The only problem was, Janus' assailant had ascended their rope, pulled it up after them, and closed the trapdoor. None of the characters had a grappling hook, pitons, a hammer, or a handy spider climb spell. So they sent Shain, and then Janus, to try to climb the sheer wall, 50 feet up to the door. They tied a rope around each one to keep them from plummeting all the way to their deaths.
That wasn't enough to keep them from slipping and falling short distances to their pain and bruising. About twelve to twenty times. This was interrupted by Peter trying to read a scroll of fly he happened to have handy. It exploded in his face, and made him feel three times heavier than normal. All in all, it was turning into a rather sorry sight, but Bartholomew finally opened the trap door to see what had happened to them. He told them their foe's name was Cullum, and he didn't know much about him, except that Cullum had visited the dungeon several times.
The party vowed to find pitons, healing potions, and revenge!
