Scared Schmidtless
I did try to watch tonight's game, but I was very distracted. First, the game started at 4, and I was still at work trying to clean up Symantec's mess. After I got home, I had the game on in the background while I updated our adoption website. (I added a "news" page with some pictures from our niece's birthday party. Note: she's only 16, and she already has a boyfriend who's bigger than Bonds.)
I did catch a couple of things from the Giants game: the Giants were ahead. And Schmidt was dealing. So when I looked up and heard that Jeremy Accardo had replaced Schmidt mid-batter, I immediately assumed the worst. Groin pull #3. Schmidt's season over. The ace removed from the deck.
Apparently, it was just a cramp, and nothing serious. Thank God. I have been reluctant to dive back on the Schmidt bandwagon, but damn, that boy is making it impossible not to. Tonight's line: 5 hits, NO runs, NO walks, 10 strikeouts, in only 5 2/3 innings. Looking at that line, I can think only this:
We're not worthy.
Here's Schmidt's last 7 starts: 5-0, 54 IP, 34 H, 7 ER, 9 BB, 44 K, 2 HR.
We're not worthy.
When he gets on this kind of tear, about the only thing that can stop it is another tear--groin tear, a hamstring tear, you know what I'm talking about. The kind of things that derailed him the last two years running. That's what scares me. He's back to the point where losing him would be a serious blow to the team. I hope to hell they pack him in bubble wrap between starts and pamper the hell out of him between innings. Masseuses, recliners, ice cream, whatever he needs, let's make sure he has it. Get Murphy and Righetti on the horn and let them know this is what we need to do!!
