Wintertime News

Tonight is the deadline to offer arbitration. At the moment the whole baseball world is awaiting the outcome of this multiple-cliffhanger drama. After that, Dallas is expected to become the scene for a re-enactment of the climax of the stirring drama "Blazing Saddles."

Now, with my tongue firmly in my cheek and all two grams of my baseball knowledge lost in a sock drawer, here are my predictions for these VITAL next 24 hours:

1) If the Giants do not come to a deal with Matt Morris, they will certainly offer arbitration to Brett Tomko. The rest of the baseball world will then be reminded that Brett Tomko actually exists.

2) J.T. Snow will not be offered arbitration, but the Giants will not emerge with a logical replacement for him. J.T. will be left standing in the lobby in Dallas, smiling blankly as bellhops, GMs, and autograph seekers alike pretend he's not there.

3) The Giants will address their starting rotation by trading a starting pitcher for another starting pitcher. Giants fans will groan. I foresee something like Noah Lowry and EME for David Wells.

4) Sometime between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Ralph Barbieri will say the words "Vladimir Guerrero" on the air.

5) I will still not have posted my personal history with baseball video games, and no one will notice whatsoever.

And now, let's switch over to Grant at McCovey Chronicles for an editorial on the Hawkins trade. Grant?
